Paleo running Momma is a comprehensive book that addresses the needs of mother and daughter, who are on a quest to reach peak physical fitness. It is full of great recipes. I was thrilled to discover many “tried and true” foods from my past. In addition to the current recipes, there are bonus sections that include: Basic Diet and Exercise Plans, Food Allergies, Shopping Lists, Paleo Shopping List, Paleo Cookbooks, The Paleo Approach to Fitness, and more.
I especially enjoyed the food and recipe section. The Paleo Diet is based on a dieter’s need to reduce carbohydrates, eat more lean meats, and avoid processed foods and sugars. The result is a healthier lifestyle that result in weight loss, decreased risk for diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, and improved overall health. As someone who used to have cravings for food additives, I was thrilled when I found recipes that weren’t a cookie cutter, and that catered more to my personal tastes. For example, one recipe called for coconut flour, but my family loved bananas, so I substituted with almond flour.
One of my favorite pages running momma recipes was chicken wings. Again, I was thrilled when I found this one. I don’t normally add any spice to my chicken wings and was thrilled to use the spices suggested by the recipe. It is also low carb, so it’s great if you’re on the go. The only slight problem with this recipe is that it requires a whole lot of liquid–more than I usually have when preparing chicken wings.
Paleo baking recipes allow me to enjoy the fruits and flavors of the foods that I love. This makes dining out with friends a lot more enjoyable and exciting. I love being able to surprise people with new things, and these also running momma recipes help me do that. The variety of recipes is also much greater than your run-of-the-mill mama recipes found in the health food aisle at the grocery store.
I’ve also been able to find some paper recipe books, which make it even easier to prepare delicious meals while on a budget. These books are filled with recipes for just about everything, and there are many vegan options as well. My daughter has also asked me to make her some dessert recipes, and those have also turned out to be simple, delicious treats. These have been a nice change from the usual frozen banana bread we have at Thanksgiving.
Breads are one of the most common Paleo breakfast items. There are a number of different breads you can eat paleo, such as oatmeal and barley. However, for dinner I prefer to eat something with a higher fat content. That being said, eggs aren’t allowed in Paleo cooking, so any recipes you use for eggs must be prepared to use another type of protein, like chicken or fish. Eggs are an excellent source of protein for your Paleo meals, especially if you bake the egg whites. Cooking the egg whites removes any of the higher fat content of the yolk, which makes them healthier and taste better.
Flour is another thing you should eliminate from your Paleo mama list. While the Paleo diet does not require you to eat grains and legumes, many of the recipes called for white flour, which contains more calories than any other flour. For breakfast, I usually eat an apple, cracker crumb made with coconut flour and almond extract, and then a salad made with lettuce, cherry tomatoes, radishes, cucumbers, onions, and avocado. You can eat almond butter instead of refined sugar, which helps me stay on track with my Paleo weight loss goals.
Baking soda is often used in Paleo recipes, but you need to be careful with its use. Since baking soda has a high sodium content, it’s probably best to avoid it if possible, especially if your goal is to shed off pounds of unwanted weight. If you must use it in recipes, try making a recipe that calls for coconut oil instead of maple sugar, or use baking soda in its place instead. However, there are many Paleo cookbooks available that still include coconut oil and baking soda as ingredients, so you can use them in the recipes you’re able to find.
